Have you met Mr Finch? Sew many tales woven in.

A man that sews is a rare commodity and one that textile artist Mister Finch is pleased to embrace by ensuring that his gender is very much part of his name.

Even more impressive is that Finch has had no real formal training in his art, but for a few short courses and an obvious natural ability, all that is perveyed below is pretty much self taught.  This self taught style is perhaps what makes them that little bit unique.

Mister Finch’s main inspiration comes from nature and it’s cyclical pattern of life, their extraordinary habitats and behaviour.  He is also very true to his English roots taking inspiration from English folklore and fables.

“Shape shifting witches, moon gazing hares and a smartly dressed devil ready to invite you to stray from the path. Humanising animals with shoes and clothes is something Ive always done and I imagine them to come alive at night. Getting dressed and live our their secret night life maybe helping and elderly shoemaker or the tired housewife.” This seems very reminiscent of my vivid imagination as a child….hence why I was always nice to my teddies!!

What makes these works even more special is that they are upcycled. The enjoyment of finding lost and forgotton bits and bobs which are recycled to create these beautiful charming sculptures that would certainly add a talking point to any home….

“Velvet curtains from an old hotel, a threadbare wedding dress and a vintage apron become birds and beasts, looking for new owners and adventures to have.”

From butterflies and moths, to spring bulbs sprouting……..

…..to fish gliding, and spiders creeping…..

Two wise owls keeping an eye out……

…and a graceful swan.

There are many more to see and they are available for sale on etsy, or if you happen to be in the UK there are a number of stores who stock these whimsical characters from folklore and fable……On with the colourful journey……..
